Our Hometown Hero

The Mentors Matter program also was recently chosen and received ten tickets to attend a 76ers game at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pa. on Friday, January 12, 2007. Youth, mentors and two parents attended the game and were treated to a catered party suite, along with several other area mentoring programs. Mentors Matter Director, Laura R. Wilson was honored by Campaign for Mentors and the United Way of South Eastern Pennsylvania for her work with Mentors Matter and received The Hometown Hero award at the game presented by retired 76er, World B. Free. Wilson was nominated by Campaign for Mentors for her work as Director and her passion for helping youth through mentoring.

“I am grateful for the award and the acknowledgement of the work done in the community with the Mentors Matter program,” Wilson states.  “For me it is all about the kids and the seniors in the program, they make it happen.  It is an interesting concept that often times someone other than a parent can say something positive to a young person and they receive it, whereas as parents we can say the same things and kids look at us like we don’t know what we’re talking about.”
