Local Teen logs most Community Service Hours
Tom Dorsheimer,, of Parkesburg, a member of Mentors Matter, was commended for his participation in Community Outreach through the program by doing the most community service hours in the last quarter. Tom is a dedicated young person who went over and above the required 2 hours per month and had the most community service hours of all- 24.5 hours! We congratulate Tom’s efforts in giving back to the community. Mentors Matter is a local mentoring program which pairs persons 50 and older with middle school aged youth. Mentors Matter is founded on the research based model of Dr. Andrea Taylor, Temple University. Mentors Matter also has a new program called the Bridge, which pairs mentors of all ages with youth of all ages and has already experienced success in reaching out to a seventeen year old young man in the community. One of the components of the Mentors Matter program is to teach youth the importance of giving back to the community through service and assistance. Mentors Matter Director, Laura Wilson states, “I see such pride in the kids knowing they are working as a team and helping various organizations, many are places where the kids themselves spend time.” Some of the places where the Mentors Matter youth do their Community Outreach are the Parkesburg Point, The Parkesburg Library, the Harrison House and Catalyst Youth ministry. Kids in the program are asked to give 2 hours each month and at the end of each quarter, the youth with the most hours receives an additional thank you with a gift and acknowledgement. Mentors Matter is also looking for volunteers who would like to help with the program or who would be interested in mentoring a young person. Mentors are asked to give 2 hours a week with a young person and ongoing support and training are provided. Share your experience.
